Toxic multinodular goitre

Toxic multinodular goitre (also known as toxic nodular goitre, toxic nodular struma, or Plummer's disease) is a form of hyperthyroidism - where there is excess production of thyroid hormones.
Symptoms of toxic multinodular goitre are similar to that of hyperthyroidism, including:
- heat intolerance
- hyperkinesis
- tremor
- irritability
- weight loss
- increased appetite
- Goitre (swelling of the thyroid gland)
- tachycardia (high heart rate - above 180 bpm at rest)
It is the second most common cause of hyperthyroidism after Graves' disease.
The type which is called Plummer's disease is named after an American physician Henry Stanley Plummer.
