[edit] Song Information
The song starts off as a sweet soulful ballad, then it changes to an upbeat R&B groove. Lyrically, the song is about making love and is a play on words with the term foreplay, meaning that she desires foreplay "24 hours a day". "Twenty Foreplay" was more of a success outside of Europe. In Australia, the song reached the top thirty. Even though the song was not released in the U.S., it charted in the top 40 of the R&B/Hip Hop Airplay charts. It was unable to enter the Billboard Hot 100 because the single was not released commercially. The U.S. version of "Twenty Foreplay" is lengthier than the International version. The International version is cut down by about 50 seconds in order to fit two more songs on Design of a Decade 1986/1996. The Twenty Foreplay (Slow Jam Fantasy Mix) is the complete version of the song and contains an extra verse (second verse).
[edit] Music video
The concept of the video was inspired by one of Janet's idols Dorothy Dandridge, who she considers to be America's first African-American Sex Symbol. The music video has a 1950's inspired look with obvious comparisons to Dorothy Dandridge. The video was shot in black and white and features Janet in the glamorous Hollywood life such as, movie premiere, press conference, and videotaping of her on the backlot of a movie set.
