U.S. Route 521 is a spur of U.S. Highway 21. It runs for (prior to 2004) 179 miles (288 km) from its north end in Charlotte, North Carolina at Interstate 485 to its south end in Georgetown, South Carolina at U.S. Highway 17. It passes through the states of North Carolina and South Carolina. It goes through the city of Sumter, South Carolina and used to go through Charlotte, North Carolina. During construction of the Charlotte Beltway, US 521 was rerouted around Charlotte along the western segment. When the eastern segment was finished, completing the loop in 2004, the northern segment of US 521 from Interstate 85 to Interstate 485 (exit 61) was truncated.
