Duke Memorial Scholarship, the Trinity Leadership Scholars Program, the Reginaldo Howard Memorial Scholarship, the Robertson Scholars Program, the University Scholars Program, and the Alumni Endowed Scholarship. In all, approximately 50 students per class received merit based aid each year.
The university offers the Angier B. Duke Scholarship to students the admissions committee believes will be leaders in their fields, which is given in honor of James B. Duke's son Angier, who was killed in a boating accident. The A.B. Scholarship includes free tuition and a summer session at Oxford in England. Notable A.B. Scholars include the humanitarian Paul Farmer, fund manager William H. Gross, author and Duke English professor Reynolds Price and the first American female Putnam Fellow (Melanie Wood). Additionally, more than five A.B. Scholars have been awarded the Rhodes Scholarship in recent years.
The B. N. Duke Scholars program is a scholarship program geared towards top high school students in North and South Carolina and covers full tuition. The Trinity Leadership Scholars Program annually awards 2-3 residents of North Carolina full tuition, room and board, and a summer stipend. The Reginaldo Howard Memorial Scholarships are awarded to students of African heritage. Some applicants to Duke are selected for the Robertson Scholarship program, which offers a tuition-free education at Duke as well as one semester at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The University Scholars program, endowed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, provides full scholarships to "exceptionally talented" undergraduates, graduate, and professional students. The program is characterized by its interdisciplinary nature. The Alumni Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship, funded by alumni donations, is given to a few students with a close alumni relation. A new program, Baldwin Scholars, aims to promote the development of female leaders through a rigorous four-year program, but does not offer any monetary award.
