Vikraman is a reputed Tamil filmmaker. He is also one of the most successful Tamil directors.

Vikraman made his debut with the movie Pudhu Vasantham, a story of four unemployed friends who are musical experts. This movie released in 1986 was successful. Its hero Murali went on to become a famous romantic actor who donned the mike-wielding singer role in subsequent movies. The music director S.A.Rajkumar became famous immediately for his melody. Its producer was R.B.Choudari. The Vikraman-S.A.Rajkumar-R.B.Choudari team together made many superhits. But a flop in Pudhiya Manargal forced him to go back.

Vikraman was recalled once again by R.B.Choudari to make a film with Vijay in 1996. Vijay, whose 6 of his 8 earlier movies were big flops, got a huge turnaround with this movie Poove Unnakkaga. Vijay is currently tipped to be the next superstar of Kollywood. He gave a huge hit to Vijay when his father couldn't give a single hit to him out of those 6 movies made together. His next movie Suryavamsham with Sarath Kumar and Devayani was a mega hit in 1997. His next movie Unnithathill ennai khoduten made in 1998 gave a fresh lease of life to Karthik and Roja who were once dominating the film industry. In 2000, he made a movie Vanathai Pola, another blockbuster which gave back the superstardom to Vijaykanth. It also won National Film Award for wholesome entertainment and also many state awards including the best picture award for the year 2000. However, his next movie in 2003, Priyamana Thozhi produced by the prestigious A.V.M banner was a colossal flop. Its bilingual Vasantham in Telugu (directed by Vikraman himself) was one of the top grossers of 2003 and also gave a fresh lease of life to its hero Venkatesh who had to face two duds in 2002. But he had to face another dud in 2004 in Cheppave Chirugali, a Telugu remake of his Unnai Ninaithu. Taking a 2 year break, he had started work again for a Tamil movie called Chennai Kadhal with a young hero Bharath (actor) in the lead.

Although he has been criticised for being a bit too sentimental, he was also praised for dealing with issues relating to family or love. If it was religion separating two lovers in Poove Unnakkaga, it was a story of a son hated by the father who moves on to increase his father's prestige in Suryavamsham, or a story of a family of four brothers who want to stay united at any cost in Vanathai pola, everything were dealt in a serious manner and also an ideal but a possible solution was given. He is also known for depicting love failure in his movies, though that is not dealt with in a pessimistic way. He is also known to make movies without vulgarity or crass comedy. He is also called "Amoga Raasi" (lucky charm) director as all the heroes and heroines who starred in his films have become big stars afterwards.
