Westmeath is a constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas. The constituency has an electorate of 56,012 and at present is served by 3 TDs. The method of election is the Single Transferable Vote. The constituency spans the entire area of the county in Leinster, taking in Mullingar, Athlone and Moate.
In 2002 general election the then Minister for Public Enterprise, Mary O'Rourke, lost her Dáil seat after over twenty years service. She was subsequently nominated to Seanad Éireann by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.
