Who Wants to Be a Superhero? is a reality show hosted by Stan Lee. Contestants dress up as comic book superheroes of their own invention. Each week, Lee challenges the contestants to represent what "superheroes are all about." One or more of the superheroes deemed the least deserving is eliminated per episode. The grand prize for the winning superhero is to have his or her character star in a Dark Horse Comics comic book written by Lee and an original movie to be aired on Sci Fi Channel. The winner also receives a trip for two to Universal Studios Florida to participate in the park's Parade of Superheroes.

The show premiered on July 27, 2006 on the Sci Fi Channel cable network. A 2-disc DVD set is available from the NBC Universal Store.

On October 6, 2006, the Sci Fi Channel announced a second season. 10 one-hour episodes from Bruce Nash's Nash Entertainment and Stan Lee's POW Entertainment are slated to air on SCI FI in July 2007.[1]

[edit] Season 1

[edit] Episode 1

The superheroes and their alter egos were introduced. Each character was profiled in true comic fashion and they had a party. Stan Lee then gave the heroes their first lessons about the show and informed them he was looking for the "human" qualities that make superheroes great. The heroes searched for and moved into their secret lair. Before they entered, Rotiart was unmasked as a spy who had been secretly recording their interactions to help Lee deduce which of them might have less-than-noble motives. Lee admonished three of the heroes: Levity for discussing the profitability of his character; Creature for flirting with the male heroes; and Iron Enforcer for his violent tendencies and bravado. Levity was then sent home, with Lee explaining that superheroes are not greedy.

Lee gave each superhero a secret communicator so he might interact with them privately. The first challenge was a "Quick Change." The contestants were to be summoned by Lee in public. They had to find an inconspicuous location where they would not be seen (in Pershing Square in downtown Los Angeles), change into their costume and then race to a destination "in true superhero-like fashion." However, a child actress in the role of a small girl who needed help finding her mother was placed en route as a surprise to see if the heroes would respond to someone in need. Lee explained that in the superhero world, things are not always as they appear to be.

Following the challenge Lee revealed its true purpose. The goal was not to transform and then reach the designated point, but to help those in need; in this case the lost little girl. Five of the remaining ten heroes did not stop (only Cell Phone Girl, Fat Momma, Lemuria and Major Victory assisted her). Lee then called forth three heroes: Nitro G for changing out in the open as well as missing the girl; Monkey Woman for appearing to notice the girl but not stopping; and Iron Enforcer for his questionable heroic nature after two failed tests. Lee asked each of them why they should not be eliminated. After each hero replied, Lee made another cut. Nitro G was sent home because he had both changed out in the open and bypassed the girl.

[edit] Episode 2

The show opened with Stan Lee appearing on the television, announcing another challenge. Each hero was to write questions to ask each other anonymously, then send the questions via pneumatic tube to Lee. Fat Momma was asked if she made a good role model as an overweight woman. Creature was asked if she ever washed her hair (Iron Enforcer remarked in an interview that she looks like a "homeless Princess Leia"); Creature replied that her hair was the source of her powers, and if she washed it she would feel "empty and powerless." Two questions were fired at Iron Enforcer -- whether he used antiperspirant and whether he used steroids and if so what sort of message that sent to children. His response was that as long as they were used for good, he didn't see any problem in using steroids. Major Victory was asked if he, as a former male stripper, would be a good role model to children. He replied that he doesn't strip anymore, that it was wrong, and that, yes, he could teach the youth the lesson he learned.

Lee soon announced a second challenge, focusing on valor and will. An elderly woman was locked out of her house, and to assist her, the heroes had to reach the back door. They arrived on the scene only to discover two vicious attack dogs occupying the backyard. The heroes donned protective gear and were timed on how long it took them to reach the door or give up by shouting "Uncle," which would cause the dogs to stop. Ty’Veculus went first and reached the door in 16 seconds. Major Victory accomplished the challenge in 17 seconds, and Feedback finished in 25 seconds. Monkey Woman struggled for 9 minutes and 43 seconds before reaching the door, earning Lee's congratulations for her determination. The others failed, notably: Creature, for failing to accomplish the task as well as laughing the entire time; Iron Enforcer, who was less than a foot from the door before crying "Uncle"; and Cell Phone Girl, who cried "Uncle" after 4 seconds, explaining that she had a headache. Lee summoned these three heroes for elimination. Ultimately, Cell Phone Girl's quick defeat earned her the elimination, with the quip from Stan Lee, "Sorry, you're out of minutes."

Following the challenge, Lee announced the remaining superheroes would be treated to new costumes. While most of the costume updates were uneventful, Ty'Veculus's caused a bit of controversy. His old helmet was replaced with a Centurion-style one including a large feathered ridge, and his suit had become golden padded armor. Upon inspection, Lee commented that the suit wasn't what he had in mind and questioned the designers. Initially Ty’Veculus pretended to love the suit, proclaiming that "my dream has been fulfilled" - but back at the den, after receiving a bit of ridicule (notably from Feedback, who told him, "Today, you are Stan Lee's biggest FAN!"), Ty’Veculus scheduled another meeting with Lee to discuss his costume. Lee allowed Ty’Veculus to wear his original costume once more. Following Iron Enforcer's costume change, Lee told him that "You know, something is just not right, but I can't put my finger on it."

After the heroes received their costumes, Lee announced another elimination. The three who were in danger were Ty'Veculus, for pretending to enjoy his costume, as Lee stated superheroes are about honesty; The Iron Enforcer, for his bravado, machismo, and failing all three challenges; and Feedback, for ridiculing Ty'Veculus's costume. In the end, Lee decided it was time for Iron Enforcer to leave.

Following several interviews with the other superheroes regarding Iron Enforcer's complete inability to fit in, the camera cut to the suitless Enforcer walking down the street. Suddenly, Lee appeared on a junked TV as Iron Enforcer passed it. Lee announced, "Hey, Iron Enforcer... During your makeover something was bothering me, and I couldn't put my finger on it, but now I know exactly what it is. You make a lousy superhero... but you'd make a great supervillain!" Enforcer agreed to the new identity, and the design team from earlier pulled him into a van for transformation. Out stepped a tall, black-suited villain with a skull-like mask. Stan Lee announced the arrival of his newest creation, The Dark Enforcer, and said that life for the superheroes was about to become a lot more difficult.

[edit] Episode 3

The episode started with Stan Lee interrupting the heroes' breakfast for a meeting. Lee said that often, a hero's villain defines the hero, and drew comparisons to Spider-Man's Green Goblin, Superman's Lex Luthor and Batman's Joker. As murmurs went up from the heroes, the lights flickered, then failed, building to Dark Enforcer's entrance. After a brief speech regarding the origins of villains, he revealed himself as the former Iron Enforcer, declaring he was "taking every one of you out!" The heroes were shocked, with Ty'Veculus in particular, demanding, "What is this treachery!?"

Lee presented the day's challenge. Each of the heroes was given $20 and sent, in costume, to a nearby café to purchase lunch. They were told that their lunch choices would be evaluated for super-heroic worthiness. Feedback suspected a trap, but seeing no cameras, relaxed. After the heroes returned, Lee and Dark Enforcer revealed the true nature of the challenge, protecting their secret identities. Stan stated that superheroes never reveal their true identities, no matter how tempting. Dark Enforcer showed hidden camera footage of each superhero.

Only Feedback and Fat Momma passed the challenge. With a little prodding from the amiable waitstaff, the remaining heroes all revealed their real identities. Lee was most troubled by Monkey Woman. Besides freely volunteering her first name, she also admitted to being an actress and gave the waiter a list of websites for breaking into acting and reality television. Lee announced an elimination and called out Monkey Woman. Lee noted that she was the only hero to reveal her identity without even being asked, and questioned her about the websites. Monkey Woman confessed to being an actress. Lee was shocked, citing her claim to be a real estate investor during her audition. Despite her teary-eyed plea, Lee ordered Monkey Woman to turn in her costume and leave the lair.

The next day the superheroes faced a challenge of courage. They were summoned to the roof and saw a "damsel in distress" on a neighboring roof. Lee informed them they would have to cross a narrow beam from one roof to the next, guided only by a thin rope, and lead the woman to safety. Each hero was then blindfolded by Dark Enforcer and sent onto the beam. Unknown to the superheroes, the beam they walked was actually on the roof and not between the buildings, similar to the "Plank over the Ravine" trick commonly used as a hazing ritual. Each of the remaining six heroes successfully navigated the beam and led the woman to safety. After their blindfolds were removed they realized they were never in any danger and that the woman they "saved" and the original damsel were identical twin sisters (played by Julia Costello and Chandra Costello). Feedback in particular told Lee that he was prepared to face any challenge and overcome any obstacle, drawing the ire of Dark Enforcer.

Since each superhero had passed this challenge, Lee announced a new one. They would have to learn of the difficulty he faced in making eliminations by nominating one of the remaining superheroes to be the next eliminated. Creature volunteered to speak first and nominated herself. Major Victory, Feedback, and Lemuria followed suit by stating they should be sent home. Ty'Veculus nominated Lemuria, expressing his doubts about her emotions and motives of being a superhero. Initially refusing to eliminate anyone, Fat Momma finally nominated Feedback, stating that his condemnation of himself after a failed challenge was too harsh, and he might "snap," jeopardizing the well-being of himself and his fellow heroes.

On the roof, Lee called Ty’Veculus and Fat Momma for elimination. He told the heroes that this had been a test of self-sacrifice and that while he could not know the true motives of those who had nominated themselves, they had given him the answer he wanted. Lee told Fat Momma that while she had failed the challenge, she had nominated Feedback out of concern and that in her own way she was trying to save him. Ty'Veculus, Lee said, had no such noble motives. The Warrior of Light was asked to turn in his costume. All of the remaining heroes except Creature and Lemuria embraced Ty'Veculus in a heartfelt goodbye.

In the lair, Fat Momma lashed out at the other superheroes, accusing them of dishonesty and manipulation in nominating themselves. In an interview, Lemuria stated that Lee would have to "do a lot more than that to outsmart me" and she would "do anything, whatever it takes to stay in the game." In the final moments, Fat Momma vowed to see all the other heroes eliminated before her as "payback" for Ty'Veculus.

[edit] Episode 4

As a new day dawned, the remaining superheroes patrolled the streets of Los Angeles to do some super deeds. Creature encouraged a civilian to pick up his litter. Major Victory escorted two ladies across the street, laying down his cape for them to walk on in an act of chivalry. Fat Momma challenged a parking enforcement officer for writing tickets when he himself was illegally parked. Feedback instructed some jaywalkers to stop and escorted them to a crosswalk. He also stood in front of a boutique's lingerie display as youngsters passed by. Lemuria yelled at a passing trucker to properly use his turn signals. Ironically, Creature jaywalked while distributing clothes to homeless people.

Back in the lair, Stan Lee congratulated the heroes on their good deeds. Suddenly, The Dark Enforcer appeared on his own screen and told Lee that he had some dark and shocking revelations about the heroes. Dark Enforcer explained he had interviewed the heroes' family and friends. As a shock went through the heroes the secrets were exposed:

  • Creature's friend revealed the strict environmentalist was a litterbug herself and once threw items out a hotel room window into a fountain.
  • Feedback's wife explained that the fastidious and organized Feedback was "inconsiderate" and a "slob" in his own home.
  • Fat Momma's momma explained the hero hadn't always been comfortable with her body and that while in college she and her sisters went on numerous diets.
  • Major Victory's former stripping colleague revealed a second alter ego for the Major: "Thong Man." While Major Victory's stripping past was no secret, it was directly brought up again. As Major Victory smirked the Dark Enforcer teasingly waved a dollar bill at him.
  • Lemuria's friend revealed that Lemuria was known to use her sex appeal to her advantage and would often flirt with every cute guy in sight. Her friend also commented she was known for her table dancing routine.

Lee then called for an elimination. Major Victory, Creature, and Fat Momma were called forth. Lee stated that while Major Victory acknowledged his past and regretted his mistakes, the stripping coming up constantly was an issue. Creature was cited for her litterbug past and for breaking the law during the first challenge. Fat Momma was admonished for contradicting her message of self-acceptance. In the end Creature was eliminated for both her hypocrisy and her law breaking during the first challenge.

The final four superheroes were then given their second challenge of the day. Lee told them they would meet and interact with convicted felons, who, unbeknownst to the heroes, were actually paid actors. Each hero was given a "secret task" to perform and decided among themselves who would perform each task. Lemuria had to sit on an inmate's lap for ten seconds, Fat Momma had to brush an inmate's hair from their eyes three times, Feedback had to hug an inmate three times and Major Victory had to massage an inmate's shoulders three times.

The heroes looked on as the first inmate (played by Dot Jones) was brought forth. Lemuria went first and held a clumsy conversation with Dot. As her time was running out she awkwardly flung herself towards Dot's lap. Dot shoved her away and angrily stormed off. Fat Momma went next and managed to complete her task.

A new inmate, a towering African American male, was brought in for Major Victory and Feedback. Major Victory went first. After being told he looked ridiculous, the Major agreed and removed his cape and gloves. After chatting up the inmate Major Victory asked about having his handcuffs removed to make him more comfortable. Major Victory moved behind the inmate -- though the inmate protested -- and patted his shoulders three times. Upon return Major Victory stated in an interview, "Feedback has to hug that guy three times? I'm gonna miss Feedback!"

Feedback met the convict next. By this time, the man was asking repeatedly to have his handcuffs removed, or he would go back to the van. Feedback interceded with the prison guard and asked him to remove the convict's handcuffs, then began conversing with the convict. When asked why he was in prison the convict told him, "Murder, man. Four counts." When asked if he felt remorse or regret for the families of his victims he said he felt none because his own father had been murdered. Upon hearing this Feedback revealed that when he was 14 years old his own father committed suicide. Taking advantage of the emotional moment Feedback shared a hug with the convict and used the time to get an additional two hugs, completing his task. As they departed, Feedback promised to write to him in jail.

At the lair Lee announced the second elimination. Lemuria and Major Victory were called out. Lee noted that Lemuria was the only hero to fail the inmate challenge. He admonished the Major for his habit of removing his clothing. Not only did he remove his cape during the first challenge, he removed his cape and gloves during the second. Lee stated emphatically that a superhero never removes his costume under any circumstance. Ultimately, the failed challenge tipped the scales and Lemuria was asked to turn in her costume and leave the lair.

Following the elimination, Major Victory promised Stan that, despite old habits dying hard, he would keep his costume on at all times, except when he had to go to the bathroom. Feedback emotionally and tearfully thanked Lee for allowing him to stay in the competition this long and explained that after the loss of his father, Stan Lee's characters were the men he looked up to. He said that Spider-Man helped him make the shift into adulthood and that he tries to live up to the ideals set forth by Spider-Man. Lee said he wasn't sure he deserved that honor but was genuinely touched by it.

[edit] Episode 5

The episode began with Stan Lee summoning the superheroes to tell them they would soon face the "toughest judges of all": school children. The heroes visited the Arma J. Shull School and were introduced to a class of fourth graders. As a surprise, Lee had mock comic book covers in the classroom, one for each of the heroes. Following the unveiling of the covers, each of the heroes talked to the children about their origins, powers and messages. Feedback told the children the story of the origin of his powers which, while detailed, went right over the heads of the young children. Fat Momma had the children sing her theme song, and gave the children a message about bullying and how they should not let it get to them. Finally, Major Victory humorously explained his superpowers of speed by running around the room, and his powers of sound by singing. (Feedback covered his ears the entire time).

After each hero spoke, the children voted for their favorite hero by lining up behind their hero of choice. Fat Momma won the vote, and Feedback and Major Victory were made by Dark Enforcer to write "I will not pretend to be a superhero" on the blackboard over and over.

The heroes soon faced their next challenge, as Lee advised them that Dark Enforcer was wreaking havoc somewhere in the Universal Studios City Walk shopping center. The heroes were sent one by one to seek him out in the fastest and most superheroic way possible. They were provided with cryptic clues to help locate the supervillain. They obtained the first clue and a bottle of lotion from a woman with an anklet tattoo. The directions on the bottle stated to find a 200 pound man with a diamond in his ear and rub the lotion on his belly to reveal the next clue.

After rubbing the man's belly down they were given a second clue. A woman with short hair and a fancy purse containing $33.50 would have the third and final clue. From there the heroes found the Dark Enforcer at the Uniglobe with a stopwatch. As they reached him he mocked them for their inability to reach him sooner.

Major Victory finished the challenge in 15 minutes and 25 seconds. Feedback reached the Iron Enforcer in 15 minutes and 40 seconds. Had he not stayed behind to put every bit of change back into the woman's purse, he would have finished faster. Fat Momma, who stopped repeatedly for french fries, chicken fingers, a massage, and the short-haired woman's candy apple, completed the mission but her time was not posted on-screen (Lee would later note she had taken nearly 40 minutes longer than the others).

Back at the lair, Lee announced another elimination. Before the heroes could assemble on the roof, Fat Momma locked herself in the bathroom and asked to speak to an executive producer. She told producer Scott Satin that she wanted to leave the show out of fear for Feedback, who she felt was taking the show so seriously that it would devastate him to be eliminated. Satin left the heroes to talk among themselves. Feedback assured her that if he were eliminated he would have no regrets. Together the three decided to leave the elimination up to Lee.

On the roof, all three heroes were called for elimination. Lee praised Fat Momma's speech at the school but was disappointed with her time at Universal Studios. He complimented Major Victory on entertaining the children but was concerned that he didn't discuss his origin, as Feedback had, or his message, as Fat Momma had. Lee noted to Feedback that his talk was above the heads of school children. He also complimented Feedback for his politeness in making sure every bit of the $33.50 was replaced in the purse. Lee, noting the great difficulty of making a decision, ordered Major Victory to turn in his costume. He cited concern that the Major, with his continuning humorous demeanor, was becoming a "parody of a superhero."

Feedback stepped back onto his cube and prepared to protest, but Chris Watters told him to stand down, that he was "not the shot-caller here." As Watters was departing, Lee called him back. Stan Lee talked of Watters's goal of becoming a hero to his estranged daughter and told him, "mission accomplished." Lee then directed Watters to a cell phone behind his cube. On the line was his estranged teenaged daughter, who told her dad he was a superhero to her.

[edit] Episode 6

The lair was quiet as the finale opened. Suddenly, a surge of energy poured forth from Stan Lee's television screen, travelling down the wires and out of the lair, activating televisions around the city (including at Universal Studios and the back yard site of the attack dog challenge). Stan Lee announced from "every channel" that he would soon be crowning the next great superhero.

As Lee gazed at comic book covers featuring Feedback and Fat Momma, he reviewed the various challenges they had faced and the superheroic traits they had exhibited through the course of the competition. As the two final heroes prepared a meal, Lee appeared on the kitchen monitor and told them that after all the time they'd spent talking about their superpowers, Lee would now give their powers to them; they would learn how to fly.

Lee advised the heroes that he wanted to see how they would look on the big screen. Feedback and Fat Momma travelled to a suburban home and met a stunt coordinator who had worked on Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2. He taught the heroes the basics of stunt fighting and had them work out on a trampoline. Finally the heroes were to "fly" by jumping off a two person swing in front of a green screen. Feedback made several jumps. When it was Fat Momma's turn, she decided, because of the number of people who depend on her being healthy, not to risk injury by jumping from the swing. The heroes were then filmed in various poses in front of the green screen.

Upon returning to the lair, each hero had the opportunity to talk one-on-one with Lee. Saying he wanted to get to know the people behind the characters, Lee for the first time addressed the heroes by their real names, Matthew and Nell.

Matthew went first and spoke again of how his father, suffering from chronic pain, had taken his own life. Following his father's suicide, Matthew looked to Lee and his comics for male role models. Lee, he said, was his hero. As he had before, Lee said how touched he was by Matthew's words.

Nell said that her best moment during the show was when Lee told her he was proud of her. She said that her father was her hero. She believed that a strong man was the center of a strong family and that with her father growing older she knew that he wouldn't be with her much longer, so she cherished every day she had with him. Lee then told Fat Momma that she was one of his heroes.

Lee soon announced that it was time to declare a winner. The heroes went to Universal Studios City Walk where they were greeted by a cheering crowd. Lee showed the crowd how each hero might appear on screen, having incorporated the green screen footage into mock movie trailers for each of them.

Stating that the decision was tremendously difficult, Lee asked Fat Momma to turn in her costume. Feedback had won and was "the next great superhero." A stunned Feedback began to speak to the crowd but was surprised by his wife. Soon they were joined by his other family and friends, along with several of the previously eliminated superheroes who, Feedback yelled out, are the "real superheroes". Fat Momma joined Feedback to congratulate him, and her family and friends came out to surprise her. Lee signed off from the giant screen and surprised Feedback by appearing next to him. Feedback embraced Lee, saying how thrilled he was to be meeting the man who had been such an inspiration to him. Feedback then went downstairs (as he was on a balcony) and moved among the assembled crowd, accepting their congratulations. As the series ended, Feedback flew off-screen and was seen flying through space.

[edit] Season 2

Season Two is set to premiere on July 25, 2007. The auditions and casting occured during February and March 2007. On March 30, 2007, the Sci Fi Channel launched an internet vote to select one of three semifinalist superheroes (Rift, Thorn, and Omnicron) to be the final contestant.[1]
