Wolfgangsee is a lake in Austria that lies mostly within the state of Salzburg and is one of the best known lakes in the Salzkammergut resort region. Towns on the lake include Strobl, St. Gilgen and its suburb Abersee, and Ried (in the state of Salzburg) and St. Wolfgang (in the state of Upper Austria). The St. Gilgen portion of the Wolfgangsee is known as the Abersee. The lake has an area of about 12.9 to 13.1 km².
It is completely surrounded by mountains. In its south and southwest lies the Osterhorngruppe, a mountain range, about 1800 metres high. Directly south of St. Gilgen rises the Zwölferhorn(1521m), which can be visited by cable car. On the north side of the lake, the Schafberg is located. A rack railway, the Schafbergbahn leads up to the summit at 1782m.
