[edit] Character Information

The Phantom Thief Kid is a world-renowned thief who steals treasures and gems. He is sometimes known as Kaitou Kid or International Criminal 1412. He was named Kid when a journalist hastily scrawled "1412" and Booker (Yusaku) Kudo read it as "KID" (14=KI, 12=D)[1]. "Kaitou" (in the Japanese name) means "mysterious phantom thief."

He is an internationally wanted criminal and is originally the world famous magician Touichi Kuroba (黒羽 盗一 Kuroba Tōichi?). Eight years before the story, Touichi was murdered in a magic show[2] by a criminal organization[3] when he decided to back out of a deal with them, which feigned his death as an accident. The current Kaitou Kid is Touichi's son Kaito Kuroba (黒羽快斗 Kuroba Kaito?), a 17-year old student and amateur magician who learns magic and the art of disguise from him. Besides Kaito, Kuroba Toichi had trained Vivian Kudo, Shinichi's mother in the art of disguise[4]. Chris "Vermouth" Vineyard's mother Sharon is also one of his students[5].

Inspector Nakamori has always chased after Kid, though oddly enough approves of his daughter Aoko's childhood friend, one Kuroba Kaito. Aoko is Kaito's love interest in the manga Magic Kaito. The son of a high police official, Saguru Hakuba is his rival both for Aoko and as a detective to his thief. The witch, Akako Koizumi, has expressed interest in him.

Kaito uses a number of gadgets to help with his stealing; the most notable are the card gun, the playing cards which can cut concrete, a hang glider cape, pink smoke bombs, and blow-up mannequins.

Not many people know about his true identity, even Conan Edogawa. Kaito becomes a thief to investigate the mysterious death of his father, who was killed by members of the Black Organization. He finds out that they are searching for the Pandora Gem and decides to prevent them from finding it.

Hakuba and Kudo can be compared to Sherlock Holmes and Kaito to Arsène Lupin. Throughout the anime and manga, Kaito Kid and Conan have crossed paths but he has always managed to escape from Conan's clutches by his special skills.
