[edit] Biography

Baroni was a two time All-American collegiate wrestler at Central Michigan University and also a body-builder for a period of time. Still wishing to compete after finishing college, Baroni began to train in mixed martial arts [1].

[edit] Fighting in the UFC

Baroni quickly made a name for himself in the UFC with several impressive knockout victories and a series of losses to Matt Lindland and Evan Tanner. His signature match was a decisive knockout victory over former UFC champion Dave Menne on September 27, 2002. Baroni then suffered through four consecutive defeats and was released by the UFC. However recently, on MMAWEEKLY radio UFC President Dana White announced he will give Phil an offer to comeback to the UFC if he defeats Frank Shamrock at Strikeforce in April.

[edit] Fighting in PRIDE

Baroni joined Hammer House soon thereafter and rebounded in Japan's PRIDE Fighting Championships promotion with several knockout victories. On June 4, 2006, Baroni was summarily defeated by Kazuo Misaki via unanimous decision in the Bushido Welterweight Grand Prix 183-lb tournament. In 2006 Baroni returned from a show in Japan to find his wife divorcing him. This situation has left the fighter in low spirits at a time where his current fight contracts have expired.

On October 21st 2006 Baroni captured a victory over boxer turned MMA fighter Yosuke Nishijima via kimura in the first round at PRIDE 32, PRIDE's first American show.

[edit] Feud with Frank Shamrock

Frank Shamrock and Baroni have engaged in a war of words following Shamrock's fight with Cesar Gracie. A fight between the two has been scheduled under a co-promote banner between EliteXC and Strikeforce later this year possibly in April.[2]
