Phil Pfister (born May 15, 1971 in Charleston, West Virginia[1]) is the 2006 Met-Rx World's Strongest Man, winning the competition and its $41,000 grand prize on 23 September 2006 in Sanya, China. He is the first American to win since Bill Kazmaier in 1982.
Prior to 2006, Pfister's best World's Strongest Man finish was fourth position in 1998 in Tangier, and fourth in 2001 in Victoria Falls.
While qualifying for his 4th place finish in Victoria Falls, during an event known as the Hercules Hold, Pfister made a verbal promise that he would be the man responsible for bringing the World's Strongest Man title back to the United States. He went on to set two qualifier records in the Hercules Hold and in the Atlas Stones, but was unable to contend in the finals against the Scandinavian competitors that took the podium finishes that year, Magnus Samuelsson from Sweden, Janne Virtanen from Finland, and Svend Karlsen from Norway, respectively. During the final of the 2006 championship, he set the World Record for the Fingals Fingers event, setting a time of 5 lifts in 31.92 seconds.
Pfister works as a firefighter and currently resides in West Virginia with his wife Michelle and son Wyatt.
Pfister is a life-time drug free athlete(aside from a couple lines of cell tech here and there) and he often speaks at schools encouraging children to stay drug-free.
