Philip John Wilson (Born: April 1, 1981 in Charleston, West Virginia) is a minor league starting pitcher prospect last seen in the Seattle Mariners farm system in 2005. He attended Poway High School in Poway, California.
Standing tall at 6'8" and weighing in at 210 pounds, this right hander was selected in the third round-101st overall-by the Anaheim Angels in the 1999 amateur entry draft.
His first professional season, 2000, was a good one and perhaps his best. He split time with the Cedar Rapids Kernels and Lake Elsinore Storm. In six games with the Storm, he went 3-0 with a 1.96 ERA. Combined, he went 11-5 with a solid 3.06 ERA.
After that, his career imploded. In 2001 with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and Arkansas Travelers, he went 9-11 with an ERA of 5.46, 115 strikeouts and 59 walks combined. He threw 19 wild pitches with the Quakes, averaging 1 every 8.4 innings. While with the Travelers, he had an ERA of 11.37 in two games.
2002 was even worse for Wilson. Spending time with the Quakes and Travelers again, he went 6-9 with an ERA of 6.07 . Even though he threw less wild pitches that year (18) he still averaged one wild pitch every 7.2 innings-considerably worse than his previous season. He also gave up 23 home runs, combined.
In 2003, he appeared in only four games-two for the Kernels and two for the Quakes. Although his performance was only mediocre, it was still a step up from the two seasons before. He went 1-2 with an ERA of 3.92 (although his RA was 8.27-in just 9 2/3 innings with the Quakes in 2003, he gave up 9 unearned runs. He gave up one unearned run with the Kernels).
For the first time in his career, Wilson appeared in relief in 2004. Playing for the Quakes, he appeared in 38 games total, starting 16 of them. He went 3-9 with an ERA of 6.50. He hit "only" 9 batters that year.
On December 14, 2004, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays selected Wilson in the Rule V Draft. He never played in the Devil Rays organization, though.
In 2005, Wilson played some independent baseball and was also in the Seattle Mariners organization for a few games. With the Chico Outlaws of the Golden Baseball League, Wilson started two games, going 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in 10 innings. He walked 8, struck out 9 and threw four wild pitches. While in the Mariners organization in 2005, he played for the Inland Empire 66ers and the San Antonio Missions. He was a reliever while he was in the M's organization. In 5 games with the 66ers, he struck out 9 in 8 2/3 innings, but still had an ERA of 6.23. In 4 games with the Missions, he had a 5.56 ERA, throwing 3 wild pitches in 11 1/3 innings.
Overall, Wilson has a 32-37 minor league record with an ERA of 5.05. He has thrown 65 wild pitches, with a career average of one every 9.6 innings. He has been teammates with Jared Abruzzo and Mario Mendoza for four years each-longer than any other teammate.
