[edit] History
Founded in 2003 Philosopher spend little time until turning their musical efforts towards the literary works of American author H.P. Lovecraft.
After singer Mike Seifert joined substituting former singer André Günther the band released with 2002's EP "What Dwells Beyond" a first sign of existence. The self-released 4-track album obtained lots of good voices from international critics and confirmed the band around leader Alex "Snakes" Pohl in its endeavours on both Lovecraft and death metal issues. According to that the band started to name their musical genre "Lovecraftian death metal".
So the band started working on new material for the upcoming album "Thoughts" that in cooperation with Mario Dahmen of Worldsend studio (The Antidoctrine, 10-Fold-B-Low; working for Locomotive Music and Roadrunner Rec.) was released on Ruptured Silence Records - a young German label that signed the band recently before. 2005 finally saw the release of "Thoughts", the first full length CD of the band which also gained good reviews:
“…Unlike many death metal bands these days, PHILOSOPHER do not try to be the most brutal and barbaric sounding death metal band on earth, but count more on making their songs stand out right from the very moments when their songs start capturing…”
“…A stimulating tension melds from this album churning morbid rhythm and riffing...”
“…PHILOSOPHER show a high level of originality and creativities…”
“...Promising band!...“
et cetera
With the release of the EP "Laws Ov Form" in 2006 Philosopher show that they made huge progress towards songwriting, arrangements, performance. They embedded uncommon sounds and sound layers into their music, worked on new live concepts e.g. engagement of a VJ as 5th member. Polish artist Jowita Kaminska supplied the cover for "Laws Ov Form" and supports also the band's live visualisation.
The band also appears among bands like Tiamat, Morbid Angel, Nile,... in the new book "The Strange Sounds of Cthulhu - Music Inspired By The Writings Of H.P. Lovecraft" of American music journalist Gary Hill who portrayed the tremendous influence of Lovacraft's writings on a variety of musical genres.
