The 17th Asian Games (also known as the XVII Asiad) is the largest sporting event in Asia. The host city will be announced in the Olympic Council of Asia's general assembly in Kuwait, will be held from April 14 to April 17, 2007.[1]
[edit] Bidding process
Two cities has bids for this 2014 event, they are Incheon and New Delhi. However, the two biding cities had arguments even before the voting process. India’s sports chief thinks that they should win the bid after the sports infrastructure are well in place after hosting the 2010 Commonwealth Games.[2] But, South Korea's bid leader Shin Yong-Suk criticised the New Delhi attempt to host the event for the third time after 1951 and 1982, and hosting another bigger sporting event in a short period after 2010 Commonwealth Games. Also, he criticised India for offering free air tickets and accommodation in lobbying the event.[3]
Officials from South Korea claimed that Incheon would be a high-technology city by 2014.
[edit] Sports restrictions
The OCA has set the benchmark on the number of sports the 2006 Asian Games. Only 35 sports are allowed, with 28 of them will be Olympic sports and the other seven will be added as negotiated with the organiser. The reason for the decrease in the number of sports is because part of the Asian Games sports will be moved to the Asian Beach Games which will start at the 2008.[4]
