[edit] History

  • This had something to do with Industrial Revolution in Manchester. The raw cotton was being exported from India. This was turned into cotton cloth and that cotton cloth was being sold to people in India. The resulting value addition in the cloth was draining the local economy. The concept was of making a village self-dependent ("swavlambi"). This way, a village does not have to depend for basic necessities coming from outside the village. This would promote local economy. People would not have to leave village in order to look for way to make living.
  • For quite a while some schools used to have spinning classes as a part of study. Where students learned to spin thread from cotton and weave khadi clothes. The school supply stores (called book stores in India) used to carry cotton (pooni) as one of their merchandise items.Npindia 22:37, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
