Ugh, where to start. If I can find actual evidence to contradict these points I will go ahead and change the article myself, but for now I just want to address them.

1.

His political longevity was not matched by widespread popularity

I don't believe this is true, but even if it is, where's the evidence?

2.

His Non-Partisan Association party often publicly split
with him on policy disputes

I recall this happening in the last one or two years of his mayorship, but not before.

3.

and led to some embarrassing compromises.

Which were?

As well, despite winning three elections (1993, 1996, 1999)
he never enjoyed widespread public support

See 1.

4.

Much of his electoral success was attributed to a lack of capable
opponents, as well as a general declining interest in municipal
politics among Vancouver voters.

  • I agree with your points, anonymous user. In its present form, it is a slap-dash article that does not address any of the issues of the Owen years (the Olympic bid, the Woodwards redevelopment, the dispute over "harm reduction," etc.), but rather reflects the original author's personal reaction to the character of the man. If you could fix it up, you'd be doing us all a service, and I will be happy to help if you take the lead. Fishhead64, 06:10, 30 January 2006 (UTC).
Oh oops, didn't realise I didn't sign my post above, sorry about that. I am *really* not much of a researcher, but if I can find any reliable sources on the net I'd be happy to try to put some sourced material into the article. Any help would be most appreciated.--Anchoress 07:51, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
