[edit] Biography

[edit] Singapore showbiz career

Phyllis Quek's entry to Singapore showbiz was through Star Search 1995, in which she garnered a third placing. Despite this, a stunning performance in her debut drama serial, Beyond Dawn (女子监狱), where she played a husband-attacker-turned-jailbird, left an indelible impression in the hearts of viewers. She was subsequently awarded the Best Newcomer Award at MediaCorp's Star Awards ceremony in 1996.

Subsequently, she starred in three shows as the love interest of Benedict Goh, namely The Other Parent (妈妈先生), Mind Games (危险人物) and On The Frontline (穿梭生死线). Her recording of the theme song for The Other Parent (妈妈先生) marked the start of a nascent career in singing.

In 1998, she starred in a highly-rated MediaCorp drama serial, The New Adventures of Wisely (卫斯理传奇). She played a plain Jane who suddenly recalled her previous life and was subsequently caught in a love triangle with a police officer (played by Li Nanxing) and her boyfriend (Jerry Chang). In 1999, she played Mudan Fairy in the serial, Legends Of The Eight Immortals (东游记), opposite Taiwanese actor Ma Jingtao.

[edit] Movie forays

That same year, she struck gold when the movie production arm of MediaCorp, Raintree Pictures, offered her a lead role opposite Hong Kong megastar Aaron Kwok and Daniel Wu. The movie, 2000 A.D., was a joint collaboration between Hong Kong's Media Asia Films and Singapore's Raintree Pictures. She starred in the action flick to great acclaim, which won her attention in the Asian media. She subsequently followed this up with a supporting role as a policewoman in another Raintree Pictures film, The Tree (孩子树), in 2001, for which she recorded three songs as part of the movie soundtrack.

[edit] Album release

In 2001, she made a critical decision to switch to another management company, Hype Records/Artiste Networks. She released her debut album Freedom under Hype Records, which contained primarily dance tunes and singles from the soundtrack of The Tree. To promote her album, Phyllis made a guest appearance on a Singapore English-language crime drama series Heartlanders 2 opposite Vincent Ng and Aaron Aziz, where she played a stalked actress. That particular episode featured her single 不知不觉 thrice.

Despite a slick marketing campaign that involved Hong Kong stylist William Cheung Suk Ping and photographer/conceptualist Wing Shya, the album did not mark the start of a longstanding music career for Phyllis. It was to remain her first and only album.

[edit] Regionalisation

In keeping with Hype Records' plans for regionalisation, Phyllis made another conscious decision to star in productions from primarily the East Asian region (including Taiwan and China). She made her 2001 debut in Taiwan headlining the wacky lead role in a fluffy idol drama titled My Fair Lady (丑女大翻身), in which she donned fatsuits and prosthetics in order to play a fat and undesired girl. In addition, she worked with prominent Taiwanese director Yang Pei-pei on a Taiwanese period blockbuster, The Palm of Rulai (如来神掌) in 2002. In the same year, she worked with Taiwanese pop idol Alec Su on a period drama Heaven Sword And Dragon Sabre (倚天屠龙记).

In 2003, she snagged a supporting role in a Hong Kong-Shanghai co-production drama serial, Carry Me Fly and Walk Off (带我飞, 带我走), opposite Hong Kong stars Benny Chan and Charmaine Sheh. In 2004, she took on another supporting role in Love Contract (爱情合约), a Taiwanese idol drama starring Ariel Lin and Mike He.

[edit] Recent showbiz career

The regional productions mentioned above have earned Phyllis some form of recognition in the East Asian showbiz arena, but she has never been a news-maker. This, combined with her long absence from Singapore showbiz, resulted in a gradual decline of media exposure on her in Singapore. This was exacerbated by the fact that while she still occasionally receives offers from MediaCorp to do drama serials, the roles offered are supporting characters (such as her supporting role in Man at Forty (跑吧,男人) (2004) opposite Zoe Tay) instead of lead roles that was de rigueur in the past. In addition, the 2005 consolidation of MediaCorp and MediaWorks has resulted in a fervour to develop new TV showbiz talents, to the detriment of older artistes. The perception has been that Phyllis's star has waned since her heyday in 2000 and 2001.

However, advertisers have still latched onto her star power. Since 2001, she has been a favourite among advertisers such as Lux body shampoo, Tiger Balm Oil, Fancl, Bigen Prominous Hair Dye and Marie France Bodyline.

In 2006, she made a guest appearance on a local variety show, Project Slim 2 (享瘦人生 2). Hosted by Jeff Wang and Irene Ang, the show featured her performing an Indian dance skit with a female contestant in a slimming competition. She returned to Singapore television screens in the serial Rhapsody in Blue (蓝色仙人掌), where she played a henpecking, maid-abusing career woman opposite local host Guo Liang. Phyllis also graced the cover of the November's issue of Feminine's cover (a Malaysian female magazine). She has also found a Singaporean audience for her China period work - her production The Little Fairy (天外飞仙) aired in Singapore in November.
