Phyllis Summers Romalotti Abbott Newman is a fictional character in the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless. Phyllis has been portrayed by actress Michelle Stafford from 1994 to 1997 and from 2000 to the present. From 1997 to 1998, the role was played by Sandra Nelson.

[edit] Character

Co-founder of NVP Retreats, Phyllis has been described as "a redhead with a fiery spirit, a heart of gold and a fierce determination to succeed".

Over the years, Phyllis has committed a long list of crimes, such as drink-spiking, murder, attempted murder, bribery, breaking and entering and abduction, though was never caught or prosecuted for these crimes.

Her biggest crime was committed in 1994 when she tricked rock star, Danny Romalotti (Michael Damian), into thinking that he had slept with her and was the father of her child. Danny left his wife and reluctantly married Phyllis. In 1997, Danny learned the truth, and in 1998 he won custody of Phyllis' young son, Daniel.

It was not until 2004 that Phyllis reunited with her high-school aged son Daniel (Michael Graziadei), and told him the truth about why she had not been in his life. Daniel forgave his mother and moved in with her. Since then, she has renounced her villainous deeds and has become a solid member of the community.

In 2002 Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters) turned the tables on Phyllis by framing her for arson in order to break up her marriage to Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman). Jack seduced Diane into a confession and Phyllis was acquitted, much to Diane's anger, but the Abbott marriage crumbled for other reasons the year after.

Although Jack and Phyllis divorced, they managed to remain close. They reunited in 2005, but were torn apart by Phyllis' recent affair with married man (and Jack's former step-son) Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow). Jack knew he had no future with Phyllis when he realized Nick and Phyllis were in love with each other. Phyllis delivered a baby girl and named her Summer.

After Nick divorced Sharon (Sharon Case), his wife of ten years, Nick and Phyllis were recently married. At first, Noah (Hunter Allan), Sharon and Nick's son, was not happy with his father's split with his mother, but since then, he has warmed greatly to Phyllis, and truly likes her. Nick's ex-wife Sharon, though bitter over Nick being happy with Phyllis, has moved on to date Jack.

Phyllis Newman and Drucilla Winters (Victoria Rowell) share a deep-seated animosity toward one another. Even the marriage of Phyllis' son Daniel to Drucilla's daughter Lily (Christel Khalil) has done nothing to bring peace between the two women, who are far too similar to one another to ever become friends.

In late 2006, it was revealed that Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown) had plastic surgery to look just like Phyllis, who is good friends with Lauren (Tracey E. Bregman) and Michael Baldwin (Christian LeBlanc). In February 2007, Shelia showed up at Phyllis' door and Phyllis was kidnapped from her home by Shelia. On February 9, 2007, Lauren shot Sheila dead.

[edit] Awards

Michelle Stafford has won two Daytime Emmy awards for her portrayal of Phyllis; "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series" in 2004 and "Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series" in 1997.
