- May be 300/400 years ago, it WAS a title, most likely something like "Justice"., but later it became part of the name/family name. হাজি is still a prefix denoting the performance of Hazz. But things like Kazi, Munshi, Choudhuri, Sorkar have become part of names. Take my family for example ... around 150 years ago, I had an ancestor named Lal Mondol, and his brother or cousin was named <something> Sorkar. The difference, as I was told, was that those who got some education, used the title Sorkar, while those who didn't used the title Mondol (no idea whether the myth is true, but that's what I heard from village elders).

- Same goes for Choudhury, which is supposedly a title bestowed by British, Mazumdar, Talukdar, Chakladar, etc. Syed is a prefix, used to denote direct lineage from the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), but now it is sort of a family name prefix.
