[edit] Summary
View of the Belvedere of the God of Literature [Wen Chang Di Jun Ge] (now known as the Studio of Literary Prosperity or Wen Chang Ge), Garden of the Clear Ripples [Qing Yi Yuan] (now known as the Summer Palace or Yihe Yuan), Peking (now Beijing), China
"Imperial Summer Palace, before the Burning, Yuen Ming Yuen (sic), Pekin" (title from a print of this image appearing in an album compiled in 1862)
This photograph was taken by Felice Beato between 6 and 18 October 1860. On 18 and 19 October 1860 the summer Palace was burned down by British and French forces and the Belvedere of the God of Literature was destroyed. Sometime between 1886 and 1892 the Belvedere was rebuilt - with three instead of four storeys - by order of the Empress Dowager Cixi.
