Éder Aleixo de Assis, was also known as Éder (born May 25, 1957 in Vespasiano, Brazil), is a former Brazilian footballer. He played as a left winger and striker, most notably with Clube Atlético Mineiro and with the Brazilian national team.
[edit] National team
He had 52 caps (5 non official), between May 1979 and April 1986, with the Brazilian national team.
He played in the 1982 FIFA World Cup. He was nicknamed O Canhão ("the Cannon") as he was supposed to have the strongest shooting power in the world.[1] He scored a goal against the Soviet Union during the World Cup. The goal is often regarded as one of the greatest goals scored in World Cup history. After his team mate, Falcão, let the ball go between his feet, Eder chipped the ball up with his left foot before striking the ball into the net with the same foot from a 25 meter range. Rinat Dasaev, the Soviet goalkeeper - then considered the best goalie in the world - didn't even move.[citation needed] He was also in the frame for the 1986 squad, but didn’t end up making the trip to Mexico.
