Ōsumi Islands

The Ōsumi Archipelago is a group of islands in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. It lies south of the Osumi Peninsula in Kyūshū. The archipelago consists of the islands of Tanega and Yaku as well as several other smaller isles and covers a cobined area of approximately 475 square miles (1,230 square km). Nishinoomote is the chief town and is located on the northwest coast of Tanega. The Portuguese landed on Tanega in 1543 and introduced sugarcane and firearms to Japan.
