106.7 The Rocket was an Independent Local Radio station broadcasting from the suburb of Knowsley near Liverpool in the United Kingdom. The station originally launched as KCR 106.7, a community radio service for the area, but this originally proved to be financially unsuccessful. KCR was taken over by The Local Radio Company (TLRC) in 2004 who embarked upon a significant rebranding and relaunch. During the period between the takeover and the relaunch, many of the original volunteer presenters and some specialist music shows were taken off the air, and replaced with paid proffessionals, and what was thought to be more popular programming.
The Rocket broadcast TLRC's Musicfunlife format. The name refers to Stephenson's Rocket, a locomotive which was operated in the area, as well as the well-known landmark of the Rocket roundabout (itself named after a local pub), which marks the end of the M62 motorway close to Knowsley.
In 2006 the station was sold back to some of its original owners for £100,000, around a fifth for what it had been sold for 2 years previously. At this time 'The Rocket' had actually achieved less audience than when it broadcast its original KCR format (Source RAJAR 2004-2006)
In 2007 the name 'The Rocket' was ditched and KCR once more returned to the airwaves, however most of the daytime line-up from The Rocket including Terry Lennaine (ex-194 Radio City) and John Cooper remained with the station.
