Home decor of the 1980s often took many forms, and is seen by many as a dramatic transition away from the styles of the 1960s and 1970s. Where these earlier decades focused on more earthy looks, the styles of the '80s moved more toward glitz and glamor.

[edit] Art Deco Revival
The art deco style, originally popular from the late 1920s through the 1940s, enjoyed a resurgence in the 1980s. These new styles were not exact duplicates of the original furnishings, but were inspired by them. Sleek, geometric shapes became popular, as well as soft pastel colors such as mauve, taupe and seafoam green. Also common were brass accents and lacquered wood, all inspired by the art deco look. Black and white combinations were also popular. The art deco revival style lasted well into the early 90's.

Following the popularization of the pastels of the art deco revival style was the "Florida look." Furnishings and decorative items inspired by beach houses became popular in the mid-to-late 1980s, and it was common to find wicker furniture, seashells and palm trees as decorative items in many homes.

Following the advent of the personal computer in the early 1980s, the tech look was popular throughout the decade. Elements of the tech look included grid patterns and three-dimensional shapes against sleek black backgrounds. Accent colors ranged from bold primaries to fluorescents and often included the wildly popular teal. The newfound popularity of the halogen lamp fit well into this style.

A return to simple Americana hit big in the mid 1980s, with country-style handcrafted items abounding. Many elements of this look included ducks and geese, apples, hearts and baby dolls. Often these elements were found stenciled on walls as well as on household items. Slate blue was the color that usually dominated this look, along with accents of bright red, yellow and white.

The dusty pastels and overstuffed furniture common to homes in Santa Fe, New Mexico, became popular across America in the late 1980s.
Other common elements of 1980s decor that ran across many styles included vaulted ceilings, brass accents, mirrors, track lighting, bronzed glass, flamestitching, sectional sofas, and globe-style light bulbs. Ceiling fans also exploded in popularity during this time.
