[edit] Previous season
Les Miles second season at LSU was just as successful as his first. The Tigers finished with a 2006 record of 11-2, just as they had in 2005, and finished the season on a 7 game win streak, culminating in a win at the Sugar Bowl over Notre Dame, 41-14.
[edit] Pre-season
At the end of the 2006 season, offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher left to take the same position at Florida State. Les Miles hired Gary Crowton out of Oregon to replace him. LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell chose to enter the 2007 NFL Draft at the end of the 2006 season and is expected to be a high pick. QB's Matt Flynn and Ryan Perrilloux will compete for the starting job.[1] A third, though unlikely candidate would be Jarrett Lee, an incoming freshman from Brenham, Texas.[2] The Tigers had a highly ranked recruiting class, ranked #4 at Rivals.com. Heralded running back Joe McKnight of River Ridge, Louisiana, was the Tigers' primary target, but opted for Southern California instead. However, the Tigers were able to land five star wide receiver Terrance Toliver from Hempstead, Texas.[3] Toliver and JC recruit Demetrius Byrd are supposed to replace senior WRs Dwayne Bowe and Craig Davis. LSU also grabbed another five star recruit in defensive back Chad Jones of Southern Lab,[4] who will have to fill the void left behind by LaRon Landry.
Early unofficial preseason polls have ranked LSU as high as #2 going into the 2007 season.[5]
