- 2016 Summer Olympics - Host city to be chosen in 2009. Montreal, Canada will make a run at it, to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the prior Olympics of 1976 that were held in the city. The United States is also expected to be the front-runner for the games choosing between two finalist cities, Chicago or Los Angeles. The city of Tokyo is Japan's bid to host the event. The Indian capital of New Delhi will also be bidding for the event. Other frontrunners are considered to be Bangkok in Thailand and Dubai in the UAE.
- The right for the US forces to use Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands as a military base will end at this year, but there will be a provision for an automatic extension for another 20 years for the US forces to remain stationed on the island.
- Start of unmanned test flights of the Lunar Surface Access Module for future U.S. lunar landings.
- ITER, an international scientific experiment (2nd largest worldwide ever) into developing nuclear fusion as an energy source is set to boot up for the first time
- Sinn Féin predict this is when a United Ireland will come about.
- A satellite signal from Pluto, containing pictures of the dwarf "planet", is received.
- Former President Gerald Ford Presidential Dollar Coin Program coin becomes issued.
