The 49th Annual Grammy Awards is a ceremony honoring the best in music for the 2006 recording year (October 1, 2005 - September 30, 2006) in the United States. The awards were handed out on Sunday February 11, 2007 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. As in most years since 2003, the ceremony did not have a host.

[edit] Voting Procedure
Members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), a U.S.A. based organization, can vote for the Grammy Awards if they have worked on six albums (in production, engineering, mixing, or as the recording artist). NARAS members are peers of all who submit their work to the recording Academy, and vote based on the quality of the submitted work. It is emphasized to voting NARAS members that they are not to look at sales or charts when voting. Artists, producers, engineers/mixers, and record companies may submit works to the Recording Academy. The deadline for all submissions for the 49th Annual Grammy Awards was September 1, 2006. Nominating ballots are sent to NARAS members by October 1, 2006 which is after the 2006 recording year ends. On the ballot, voters are allowed to nominate any of the works submitted. They can only vote in eight fields other than the general field, and can vote to nominate up to five works for an award.
Members return the nomination ballots to NARAS' headquarters in Santa Monica. The artists who received the top five most votes become the nominees for the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. (Note: fewer or more than five nominees is the result of a tie.) The nominations were announced on December 7, 2006. The voting ballots were mailed to every NARAS member. They are all allowed to vote in the general field which includes the awards for Record, Album and Song of the Year as well as Best New Artist. NARAS members can vote in nine other fields. Some voting changes took place for the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. Nominees for the Historical field are now determined by a special committee. Also NARAS members are allowed to vote in the Latin fields. NARAS members are to judge strictly by quality. Ballots are mailed back to NARAS and counted by an independent accounting firm. The nominees who receive the most votes for an award are proclaimed winners. The winners were announced on Sunday, February 11, 2007 at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards.
108 different awards were handed out on Grammy night. Most awards were announced and presented at the pre-telecast portion of the show. The Dixie Chicks won five Grammy awards, including album of the year, record of the year and song of the year.[1] The song reflected on controversy over remarks made in 2003 by Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines, in opposition to the Iraq War.[2]
