I'm not real fond of registration forms and the like. There's way too much of that going around on the web these days.

None of this is making much sense. If you people are correct, then you (and the company running the place) actually don't gain anything or get to spam me or anything if I register, or sign stuff, nor is my IP or whatever any more (or less) available.

Which makes all of this unsubtle pressuring (bordering on coercion) to get me to do so apparently completely pointless.

Obviously there's a catch. You don't push people to register and the like unless doing so gets your hooks into them in some way, whether by letting you dump all over their inbox or drain one of their bank accounts or max out their credit card or whatever. Your IP (or IP block, anyway) amounts to a pseudonymous identity anyway, so it's not like registering makes you more (or less) susceptible to being controlled, coerced, or blocked by whatever netkkkops are to be found hereabouts...so pushing people to register must serve some other purpose. Since you're asking them to jump through hoops (however few), and expending effort to push people towards your registration form pages, you must have something you expect to gain, though.

So, what is it? The catch, that is...

BTW, what I "gain" when you sign your messages is an easier to read page (HagermanBot can't sign every unsigned post). What I "gain" by you registering is confirmation that you are an individual rather than any number of people sharing an IP address. Both make building the encyclopedia easier. Registering doesn't prove any of those things. I could register an account and share access to it with a circle of people, undetectably. And as far as I can tell, the number of human beings behind the registered user "HagermanBot" is in the other direction -- not one or many, but zero.

If you're unscrupulous with you account information then the account would likely get blocked for other reasons. Obviously there are no humans editing with HagermanBot, it's a registered bot. Leebo ^T/C 17:41, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
