28 A1 Class trams were built by Comeng a manufacturing company in Dandenong, Victoria, Australia.
A1 Class trams were delivered between 1984 and 1985. A second series of A Class trams, known as the A2 Class entered service from 1986. These trams are different in that they featured Hanning and Kahl brakes and different door electronics resulting in faster door operation.
A Class trams were the first modern tram on all night service on route 99, which ran from Melbourne University to Richmond, Prahran, St Kilda before terminating at Fergie Street, North Fitzroy.
The A1 Class trams were originally fitted with Trolley poles, however trams 238-258 had their poles removed and replaced with pantographs in 1988. Trams 231-237 had their poles removed in 1995 following the end of A Class operation on Chapel St services.
