Adelia is a melodramma serio, or opera, in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti. The Italian libretto was written by Felice Romani and Girolamo Marini after the anonymous French play. It premiered at the Teatro Apollo, Rome on February 11, 1841. Romani's libretto, written years earlier, ended with Adelia's suicide, to which papal censors objected. Marini was brought in to provide an alternative, happy ending which was included in the final score.
Though Adelia is infrequently performed and widely unknown, there have recently been productions in Bergamo (1997), at the Teatro Carlo Felice, Genoa (1998, recording available), and by the Opera Orchestra of New York at Carnegie Hall (1999).
