[edit] Plot Summary
10 days after 9/11, the squads are working double shifts down at "the pile" whilst trying to deal with their emotions and the sudden "hero status" thrown upon them. Alex's father is missing, as are many of the firehouse squad, and Kim returns to work.
[edit] Plot Details
On September 21, 2001, the feeling in the 55th Precinct is still one of gloom and despair. Jimmy is given a card by a small boy, who visited the fire station a while back. It is revealed that one of the squad's missing, Tommy Doyle, showed the boy around. Alex is also struggling to cope - her father Angus, a battalion chief, is missing and she is spending every hour she can down at "the pile" to try and find him.
Both the fire and police departments are being treated as heroes by the people of New York. Doc is woken up by his neighbors who wish to help him decorate his house and garden. The fire department are being given food and sympathy. People involved in incidents are apologising for the disturbance. Bosco feels useless in that "a crime has been committed and "we aren't doing anything about it. Can't do anything about it 'cause there’s no one to catch".
Sully, having cancelled his wedding on 9/11, still has Tatiana's family around. Davis encourages Sully to find a courthouse and marry her, so her relatives can go home. Luckily Sully knows a few judges who can perform the ceremony.
Kim has been down at the pile, but soon she won't be able to continue her work as she is not in the emergency services. AFter a talk with her mother, Catherine, she decides now is the time to return to work. Doc wants Kim to ride with him so he can keep an eye on her for the first few days. Lt Johnson puts Alex onto the paramedic sqaud to ride with Carlos - Alex is not happy with the move, and neither is Carlos who thinks Doc is abandoning him.
10 days later, on October 1, the remains of Tommy Doyle are found. The squad go to Ground Zero to bring his remains home, and return to find the entire neighbourhood has turned out to pay their respects. Johnson says "Thank you" to them as Jimmy hugs Doyle's widow. Later that evening Faith goes home to Fred, where she finally breaks down, relieved that she is still alive after all of this.
[edit] Notes
- This episode did not have the normal theme tune and credits. They were replaced by a softer, gentler and sombre theme.
- When the list of people who have the day off is read, all the names apart from Sullivan and Davis are those of Third Watch## crew members.
[edit] Quotes
- Catherine: If you want to do something to help, go back to work...and help the living instead of digging through that tragic pile of rubble every night.
- Bosco: I feel like we aren’t doing our job.
Faith: No?
Bosco: No. There’s been a crime committed and we aren’t doing anything about it. Can’t do anything about it ‘cause there’s no one to catch. - Davis: Hey.
Alex: Hey. You lost?
Davis: Yeah, can you, uh, tell me where to heroes are? I heard they were here.
Alex: Only if you brought a casserole. - Walsh: You know my neighbor’s starting to cut my lawn now? I didn’t ask him to, he just started doing it.
Lombardo: Send him to my place.
Carlos: How’s he feel about painting?
Walsh: I don’t know, his place looks like crap.
Lombardo: What about plumbing? I got a stopped toilet for about a week now.
Jimmy: You do the same damn thing here, man.
Walsh: What the hell do you eat, man?
Lombardo: Your cooking.
Jimmy: Now that makes you a hero.
Walsh: Kiss my ass.
