[edit] What do you do once you have the variables
Have various possibilities of tables and lists using these variables been constructed anywhere to illustrate how this template might be used? Gene Nygaard 7 July 2005 06:51 (UTC)
[edit] imp vs met
I don't like "imp".
There are often more than one metric unit, or more than one English unit, that can be used for a particular quantity. The template as it stands provides no clues as to those alternatives. Gene Nygaard 7 July 2005 06:51 (UTC)
- The imp is my general shorthand for Imperial (covering the Avoirdupois units). Imperial being my choice of words since I am British. I would never dream of calling them "English" units myself - since there is the rest of the British Isles and the Commonwealth to consider.
As for the value and the units - I leave that up to the person filling it in. If guidance is required then it goes on these pages, tt doesn't have to be included in the template. Some templates, such as template:tank do have the metric unit already filled in, but others such as template:weapon-firearm don't.GraemeLeggett 7 July 2005 08:54 (UTC)
[edit] length=
So what happens when I enter "123" in "length_imp="? What happens when I enter "42 ft" in the box, and is it the same as if I enter it without the space as "42ft"? What happens when I enter length "38 ft 5 in" in the box? What happens when I enter "18 feet 2 1/2 inches" in the box"? Gene Nygaard 7 July 2005 06:51 (UTC)
- You get what you put into the box.
- 123
- 42 ft
- 42ft (and someone else will put the space in someday)
- 38 ft 5 in
- 18 feet 2 1/2 in (and then someone rounds it off because 1/2 in is nothing in 18 foot.)
- Try it and see. Flexible, isn't it? GraemeLeggett 7 July 2005 09:00 (UTC)
