Ajax was a champion Australian thoroughbred horse by the great Heroic out of the Prince Galahad mare Medmenham foaled at Widden Stud in 1934.
He is best remembered for winning 18 races in a row, and for losing in the 1939 Rawson Stakes, when at 40/1 on, in a three horse race he went down to Spear Chief. He won the Memsie Stakes three times and the 1938 Cox Plate.
Retired to stud he sired the good horses Achilles (1950 AJC Epsom Handicap), dual Derby winner Magnificent (1945 AJC and VRC Derbies).
His record was 46 starts for 36 wins, 7 seconds and 2 thirds for prize money of £40,250. He is still the shortest-priced favourite ever beaten in Australia.
All this justified his inclusion in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame.
