Alexandria Township, New Jersey

Alexandria Township is a Township in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the township population was 4,698.
Alexandria was formed by Royal Charter on March 5, 1765, from portions of Bethlehem Township, and was incorporated as one of New Jersey's initial 104 townships by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798. Portions of the township were taken to form Frenchtown (April 4, 1867), Holland Township (April 13, 1874, restored to Alexandria on March 4, 1878, recreated on March 11, 1879) and Milford (April 15, 1911).[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 71.6 km² (27.6 mi²). 71.3 km² (27.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.36%) is water.
Alexandria Township borders Holland Township, Bethlehem Township, Union Township, Franklin Township, Kingwood Township, Frenchtown Borough, and Milford Borough.
Alexandria Township also shares the Delaware River as its border with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 4,698 people, 1,535 households, and 1,290 families residing in the township. The population density was 65.9/km² (170.6/mi²). There were 1,598 housing units at an average density of 22.4/km² (58.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the township was 97.02% White, 0.79% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.72% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.72% of the population.
There were 1,535 households out of which 42.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 77.9% were married couples living together, 4.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 15.9% were non-families. 13.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.95 and the average family size was 3.25.
In the township the population was spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 27.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 100.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.0 males.
The median income for a household in the township was $92,730, and the median income for a family was $93,619. Males had a median income of $70,996 versus $39,904 for females. The per capita income for the township was $34,622. About 4.3% of families and 5.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.7% of those under age 18 and 2.7% of those age 65 or over.

Members of the Alexandria Township Committee are Mayor Carol Hoffmann, Harry Fuerstenberger (Health Chairman), and Harry Swift (Road Chairman).[4]
[edit] Federal, state and county representation
Alexandria Township is in the Seventh Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 23rd Legislative District.[5]
New Jersey's Seventh Congressional District, covering portions of Hunterdon County, Middlesex County, Somerset County and Union County, is represented by Mike Ferguson (R). New Jersey is represented in the Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Bob Menendez (D, Hoboken).
The 23rd legislative district of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by Leonard Lance (R, Flemington) and in the Assembly by Michael J. Doherty (R, Oxford) and Marcia A. Karrow (R, Raritan Township). The Governor of New Jersey is Jon Corzine (D, Hoboken).
Hunterdon County is governed by a five-member Board of Chosen Freeholders. As of 2007, Hunterdon County's Freeholders are Freeholder Director George D. Muller, Freeholder Deputy Director Erik C. Peterson, Matthew Holt, George B. Melick and Ronald Sworen.

The Alexandria Township School District contains two schools. The two schools in the district (with 2003-04 school enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics) are Lester D. Wilson School with 259 students in kindergarten through third grade; and the Alexandria Middle School with 361 students in grades four through eight.
Students in grade 9 - 12 attend the Delaware Valley Regional High School, part of the Delaware Valley Regional High School District, which serves almost 1,000 students in western Hunterdon County. Students from Alexandria, Holland and Kingwood Townships along with the boroughs of Frenchtown and Milford attend Del Val.

- Former NBA Star Jayson Williams of the New Jersey Nets owned an estate that featured a private basketball court, a personalized movie theatre and many other features.
