Alfie Boe (b.1973) Operatic tenor, England
Alfred Giovanni Roncalli Boe was born in Fleetwood, near Blackpool in Lancashire in 1973. His earliest musical memories were of listening to his father's Richard Tauber records and at the age of 11 he discovered Puccini's La boheme for the very first time.
At the age of 17, Alfie became an apprentice at the TVR factory in Blackpool. He enjoyed entertaining his colleagues by signing opera arias while he polished the cars, and one fateful day was overheard by a client who was so impressed, he suggested Alfie should go to London to audition for the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. His audition was a success and gave up polishing cars to embark on a signing career.
He moved to London and studied signing at the Royal College of Music, the National Opera Studio and the Royal Opera House’s, Villar Young Artists Programme. Baz Luhrmann, who had spent 2 years looking for the lead for his Broadway production of "La boheme", approached Alfie for the role. Alfie went on to win a Tony Award for his performances.
In 2006, Alfie was signed to the Classic FM Presents label as their first signing in a new venture for the radio station. His album - "Classic FM Presents Alfie Boe" reached No. 2 in the UK classical chart.
In November 2006 Alfie Boe was signed to the EMI Classics label and his first album for the label entitled "Onward" is released in March 2007.
