Alice is a fictional character and the primary protagonist of the Resident Evil films-series, based on the game series by the same name. She has no basis in the games, but her existence mirrors several characters. In the first movie she is displayed as suffering from amnesia. In the second she potrays rugged hero, now having more of a purpose. She will play a similar role in the up-coming third film.
Alice is portrayed by Milla Jovovich in all three films. Though she does not appear in the games, she does eventually interact with a number of characters from the games including Jill Valentine, Carlos Olive(i)ra and Nemesis. Her primary antagonist is the Umbrella Corporation, which she used to work for.
Alice is also known as, Janus Prospero, Alice Parks, and Alice Abernathy, primarily in non-canon novelizations of the films.

[edit] Background

In the 2002 film Resident Evil, Alice suffers from amnesia. Gradually, throughout the film, she recovers her memory; however, One fills her in on her true identity when they reach the Hive. One informs Alice's memory loss was caused when a nerve gas was released into the house by its primary defenses which were activated by the Red Queen.
Through the film, Alice has flashbacks as her memory returns, she meets certain milestones within the Hive's laboratories, and when she first meets with Spence (who is also suffering the same side effects as her). Though working for Umbrella, it's revealed she was willing to expose Umbrella's experiments and bring the company down. After full restoration of her memories, she tells Matt that she was his sister’s contact within the Hive, who was trying to smuggle out a sample of the T-Virus.
Alice had access to "security codes, surveillance plans, the works". Her plans were later foiled by Spence Parks who had his own personal agenda to retrieve the T-Virus and sell it on the open market. After the outbreak in the underground lab, Alice and Matt Addison were the only survivors of the incident, upon arrival back at the mansion both were seized by Umbrella scientists and taken into quarantine at Raccoon City Hospital.
[edit] Apocalypse
In the 2004 film Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Alice discovers that she has been genetically altered by exposure to the T-Virus, and has no memory as to what happened to her. During the viral outbreak in Raccoon City, Alice is released by Major Cain to combat their latest bio-weapon Nemesis. After exiting the hospital, Alice becomes aware that the T-Virus had escaped the Hive and is now spread into the civil population of Raccoon City.

After wandering around the city, Alice begins receiving flashbacks that reveal during her quarantine session she was injected with a strain of the T-Virus.
After saving a group of survivors from three Lickers inside a church, she threatens to kill S.T.A.R.S.-member Peyton who has been bitten by a zombie. His partner Jill Valentine, stops her and insists that "If it comes to that, [she] will take care of it". Alice explains her knowledge regarding the events leading into the outbreak at Raccoon City. After receiving a phone call from Dr. Ashford the survivors make a deal to rescue his daughter Angela Ashford in exchange for a safe route out of the city.
When told to meet at City Hall, Major Cain overrules Dr. Ashford's plan and orders the immediate activation of their Nemesis program (the mutated Matt Addison). When Alice is encountered by Major Cain, he explains that Alice was unique and adaptated the changes from the T-Virus quite well; unlike Nemesis, Alice's merged human characteristics and superhuman strength into one and creating a new bioweapon. After ordered to fight Nemesis, Alice refused and was condemned to be killed.
[edit] Death and rebirth
When Major Timothy Cain orders Nemesis to begin firing at Alice, he recognizes Alice and fires at Umbrella's agents. A nuclear strike is ordered by Major Cain onto the city giving sufficient time for staff to evacuate. Nemesis perishes protecting Alice from the falling debris of a falling helicopter. Alice is impaled by a loose pole when protecting Angela Ashford, whilst fleeing in a helicopter. She is retrieved, alone, although her body has been moved out of the helicopter (possibly by the scientist, or out of respect by the survivors) by scientists, lead by Dr. Isaacs, 3 hours later in the Arklay Mountains.

3 weeks after the outbreak in Raccoon City, Alice wakes up in a underwater tank with no memory of the outbreak. It is revealed that Dr. Sam Isaacs reanimated Alice with a new strain of the T-Virus giving her telekinetic abilities. When asked about her name or any indication of the incident, Alice's memory is reduced to that of a toddler. After a minute her memory returns in a violent and rapid series of flashbacks and she responds, "My name is Alice. And I remember everything,".
She escapes out of the facility, disabling everyone in her path. Her telekinesis is shown when she kills a security guard by looking at the camera. When exiting the facility, Alice is confronted by a group of armed guards and saved by Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliveira, posing as Umbrella agents. They then attempt to leave unnoticed.
During their departure, Dr. Isaacs orders the security guards to let them go. As they depart Dr. Isaacs orders the activation of Program Alice.
[edit] Extinction
After escaping the Raccoon City incident, Alice follows a group of people from the Nevada desert to Alaska, the few who survived the world-wide T-Virus outbreak, that are on a pursuit against The Umbrella Corporation.
[edit] Parallels with the games
- In Resident Evil Alice fits the standard Jill Valentine archetype, as the heroine trapped in a nightmarish situation with only her wits and her gun.
- In Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Alice's role switches to that of the Albert Wesker archetype, as the T-Virus has given her superhuman abilities such as strength, speed, and agility. By the end, however, she has become more akin to Alexia Ashford.
