Aligarh pronunciation (Hindi: अलीगढ़, Urdu: علی گڑھ) is a city in Aligarh District in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The city is located about 90 miles south-east of New Delhi. It is the administrative headquarter of Aligarh District, and has a population of half a million. It is mostly known as a university town where the famous Aligarh Muslim University is located.

Aligarh is located at [1]. It has an average elevation of 178 metres (587 feet).
The city is located on a plain between the Ganges and Yamuna Rivers. The Grand Trunk Road passes through the city.

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Aligarh had a population of 667,732. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Aligarh has an average literacy rate of 55%, lower than the national average of 59.5%; with 59% of the males and 41% of females literate. 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Aligarh is synonymous with the University that is spread across much of the city civil lines area. Aligarh Muslim University is a residential academic institution of international repute offering more than 250 courses in traditional and modern branches of education. It is a premier central university with several faculties and maintained institutions and draws students from all corners of the world, specially Africa, West Asia and South East Asia. Other famous school of this city are Lady Fatima, Three Dots, D.S. Degree college, S.V. Degree college & T.R. Girls college.

The city has a couple of good markets - Railway Road market and Centre Point Market. Centre Point is the most happening place in Aligarh due its close proximity with University. There is also a famous Hanuman temple called Tikaram Mandir at Center Point. Recently PVR Cinemas have started their operations in Aligarh with an existing cineplex Grand Surjit. Annual Exhibition at Exhibition ground is very famous event. In this month long event people from neighboring districts visit Aligarh Exhibition.

This city is basically divided into two part known as Old Aligarh & New Aligarh. Sasni Gate, Jaiganj, Uparkote, Mahindra Nagar, Saray Sultani, Janak Puri, Vikram Colony are few of residential area in old Aligarh. While new Aligarh contains Surendra Nagar, Shyam Nagar, Medical colony etc.
