Alpine Meadows, California is a ski resort located near Squaw Valley at Northern Lake Tahoe in California. The resort has 11 chairlifts and 2 surface lifts covering 2,000 acres (8 km²) of terrain. Alpine has a vertical drop of 1,800 ft (550 m) with a top elevation of 8,637 feet (2,633 m). Minimal accommodations are available at the resort itself, so most people opt for a hotel at Tahoe City, Squaw Valley, Donner Pass, or Truckee.
[edit] 1982 Avalanche
On March 31, 1982, one of the most deadly and destructive avalanches to hit a U.S. ski area struck Alpine Meadows. Seven people perished when a large natural avalanche over-ran and destroyed the building housing the ski area's avalanche control command post.
