Amen Corner (musical)

Amen Corner is a musical with a book by Philip Rose and Peter Udell, lyrics by Udell, and music by Gary Sherman.
Based on the play of the same name by James Baldwin, it focuses on Margaret Alexander, the pastor of a storefront church in Harlem in the early 1960s, and the contention in her life. Her congregation is weary of dealing with poverty and racial prejudice, her teenaged son David has lost his faith, and her wayward jazz-trombonist husband Luke has returned home to die.
After twelve previews, the Broadway production, directed by Rose and choreographed by Al Perryman, opened on November 10, 1983 at the Nederlander Theatre, where it ran for 28 performances. The cast included Rhetta Hughes as Margaret, Keith Lorenzo Amos as David, and Roger Robinson as Luke, with Ruth Brown, Helena-Joyce Wright, Jean Cheek, and Chuck Cooper in supporting roles. Hughes was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
