Amity, Arkansas

Amity is a town in Clark County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 762 at the 2000 census. The town began as a mill town in the mid 1800s, and that continues to be the main source of employment in that area.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 762 people, 305 households, and 208 families residing in the city. The population density was 89.4/km² (231.9/mi²). There were 361 housing units at an average density of 42.4/km² (109.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.85% White, 0.92% Black or African American, 0.79% Native American, 0.92% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 2.49% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 305 households out of which 34.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.1% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% were non-families. 27.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.07.
In the city the population was spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,625, and the median income for a family was $32,188. Males had a median income of $22,330 versus $16,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,626. About 10.0% of families and 14.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.8% of those under age 18 and 17.9% of those age 65 or over.

- The town has a rough and rowdy reputation, reaching its peak in the 1970s and 1980s during which time there were family feuds, a murder, and occasional stabbings and shootings. The town has often been called "a rough and tumble mill town, where the best criminals and the best cops are bred." That is not true, of course, but is the reputation spawned from the wild days.
- Once a satellite operating center for the criminal group Dixie Mafia.
- During the 1960s and 1970s Amity High School had one of the strongest basketball programs in that region of Arkansas.
- In the mid-1990s the Amity school system consolidated with Glenwood, Arkansas to form Center Point High School, located midway between the two towns, in Rosboro, Arkansas, in Pike County, Arkansas.
- Home base of the newspaper the Arkansas Standard, founded by reporter and editor Joe May.
- Home to the Bean Lumber Company, and the Barksdale Lumber Company.
