In antiquity may cities, regions, islands, and tribes minted their own coins either as part of a nation-state, or as on behalf of their own governments. Some of these mints functioned more or less continuously; others functioned as need arose or as bullion was available. Most of these articles do not contain much information about the mints themselves, but are categorized here as an indication of their importance in the ancient world.
