ARC-5
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
AN/ARC-5 command set radio was a series of radio receivers, transmitters and accessories used to provide two-way morse code and AM radiotelephone communication for military aircraft during World War II.
In the then new Joint Electronics Type Designation System (JETDS), AN/ARC translates to "Army/Navy, Airborne Radio, Communication." Each receiver measured 273 mm (10-3/4") long by 120 mm (4-3/4") wide by 140 mm (5-1/2") high. Transmitters in the series were somewhat taller.
Units were available that covered much of the MF and HF spectrum. Despite the use of octal base vacuum tubes, they were compact, rugged and light weight. Many became surplus after the war and were often converted for amateur radio use.
