Arizona Project ChalleNGe

In keeping with the National Guard’s theme of “Adding Value to America” the Arizona National Guard has sponsored a military based educational approach to assist students who have dropped out of traditional high school, but still have the desire to succeed.
It is a two-part program. The first is a Residential Phase and the second is a Post-Residential phase. Since 1993 they have hosted 2 classes per year, with 100 students per class. The program accommodates both male and female students.
These students live in a Quasi-Military setting. They are trained in eight core program components: Academic Excellence, Physical Fitness, Community Involvement, Citizenship, Health and Hygiene, Life Skills and Job Skills over a five month period.
Upon graduation these students are placed into college, trade schools, good jobs, and some students even join the military. Graduates are matched with mentors from the community who help them to remain focused on their goals for a 12 month period after graduation.
AZ Project Challenge has a high success rate according to the Arizona Prevention Resource Center. The campus is located in Queen Creek. AZ Project ChalleNGe has been operational since July of 1993.
Students are recruited primarily from around the State of Arizona with a small percentage of students coming to the program from Nevada through a partnership with the Nevada National Guard.
Project ChalleNGe students are required to participate in unpaid volunteer community service work prior to graduation. This amounts to over 19,000 hours of community service each year that the participants give back to the State of Arizona.
