Arthur Poister

Arthur Poister was a famous organist, especially as an American pedagogue. He taught at Syracuse University and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music for many years, and a large number of famous organists studied with him during their collegiate years.

Poister taught at Oberlin for nearly 20 years, from approx. 1937 until 1948, when he moved to Syracuse University. The move was facilitated in part by the building of several new organs at Syracuse, including a pair of concert instruments and several practice organs.

The Arthur Poister Organ Competition was created in his honor in 1976[1], and is one of the leading American organ competitions.
Past students include Fenner Douglas, David Boe[2], Roger Nyquist[3], Elizabeth and Raymond Chenault[4], Carlo Curley[5], Judith Hancock[6], Donald Sutherland[7], David Hurd[8], Roberta Gary[9], Leonard Raver, and others.
