Ashiya, Hyōgo

Ashiya (芦屋市; -shi) is a city located in Hyōgo, Japan, between the cities of Osaka and Kobe. It was largely destroyed the south area in the Great Hanshin earthquake of 1995, and was rebuilt and transformed into an upper middle class suburban community,whereas the north area (mountain side) was not destroyed so much.
As of 2003,the city has an estimated population of 88,845 and the density of 4,810.23 persons per km². The total area is 18.47 km².
Ashiya-shi was founded on November 10, 1940.
From end of 19th century,capitalists and artists lived on the mountain side of this area, "Rokurokusou-chou",it has area of residences now same as Mikage(Kobe) and Nishinomiya.
There is a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in Ashiya. It has always been quite a high-class neighbourhood.
- Yodokoh guesthouse : completion is 1924.It was a residences of Yamamura-famiry (the head of a famous japanese Sake company "Sakuramasamune(櫻正宗)") at that time.It is a guesthouse of other company now.
