Aurangabad district is one of the thirty-seven districts of Bihar state, India, and Aurangabad town is the administrative headquarters of this district. Aurangabad district is a part of Magadh division.

Aurangabad features in traditional records. The Saint Chyawan spent his life in this district, and gives his name to a product of the area, called Chyawanprash. According to Hindu mythology, a deity named a small town in the area Surya Devta. In modern times, the town's name is Deo, and is the location of a popular religious festival called Chhat puja.

The Shakadwipis(Maga)Brahmins were the superior in social hierarchy of old Gaya District of which Aurangabad is a part. These Brahmins were the priestly community in the Deo Sun temple and are continue to command respect as the highest one in the social hierarchy.There happens to be many families of repute whose descendents still live in the district. Mention may be made of Pandit Damodar Mishra of Barhetta,Pandit Ramchandra Vaidya,Pandit Ramapati Vaidya, Pandit Rammavallabh Vaidya and Pandit Kamlapati Vaidya of Khaira Village in Kutumba block of Aurangabad. All of them were not only Landlords of the area but also men of great academic Achievements. All of them were great scholars of Sanskrit and tought at Kolkatta ranging from 5 to 42 years in the profession. Pandit Kamalapati Vaidya-a holder of VISAK SIROMANI (renound medical practitioner) from Dhaka Medical college in 1931 served the people through his Sri Krishna Aushadhalaya at Satbarwa , Palamu for several decades and also become the father of the village as first MUKHIA(ELECTED VILLAGE CHIEF) in two consecutive elections after India become independent in 1947.People of the village, now ablock respect him till today .His descendent Dr. Vijay prakash sharma is internationally acclaimed Anthropologist holding Einstenian Chair of Science bestowed by IBI,Cambridge, United Kingdom.
