can anyone expand this article with regard to Avid's competitors in the field, including Apple?--Alhutch 06:57, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

I made a few corrections to the article. Later, I'd like to add some more extensive material on company history. I'm new to Wikipedia, but I thought I'd start with this article, as I am the marketing manager (and founder) mentioned in the article (thanks to whoever added that tidbit rather recently). [edit] Early history?

Avid VideoShop came bundled with the video digitiser card option on the Macintosh Performa 6400, which is my first encounter with Avid, back in 1996. I can also recall having seen screenshots from a DiVA VideoShop Hypercard stack, being somewhat similar to the above (DiVA is AViD spelled backwards). Is there anyone more familiar with Avid's early history that may be able to fill in? GSchjetne 17:41, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pronunciation?

How do you prounce Avid? Like the word "avid" (eg: "I'm an avid fan") or, to rhyme with David?

It's pronounced as in "I'm an avid fan". I have a family member who works there. --Alhutch 23:14, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Early history is that Avid was partialy built on the Editdroid made by George Lucas.. back in 85. Het sold editdroid to Avid because hardware wasn't his thing...

more on the subject http://mixonline.com/mag/audio_george_lucas/index.html

Actually, the Editdroit was a different technology that pre-dated the Avid. The Editdroid and the CMX 6000 used pre-recorded video discs as a source for interactive editing. The advantage they had was high picture quality, but they had to be mastered at high expense in advance of an editing session. Avid took an all digital approach, digitizing the video and audio in real time, direct to the hard drive. The Avid was not based on the earlier video-disc based systems, nor on systems like Montage that used video tapes.

Later, Lucasfilm became an important customer of Avid. According to a history of Avid on Ask.com: "... in 1993 Avid entered into a six-year partnership with Lucasfilm Ltd. to develop a better nonlinear editor. The project would involve combining features developed by Star Wars producer George Lucas with Avid's existing editors. The new editor would be based on Silicon Graphics computers, which indicated Avid's commitment to serve a variety of computer platforms."

[edit] Elastic Reality-Is it still owned by Avid?

Elastic Reality, the software for producing the effects of morphing of one scene into another, character into an all new entity, the most famous being the fade-out and transition of scenes as seen in movies.(e.g. a bleak dark and alien landscape shot showing it at night is slowly lights up with sun rise at dawn, revealing the landscape to be a terrain which looks beautiful as the sun light brightens the day, or famous StarWars 2 suns scene). I had this software wayback in 1998-99 and the product creator and EULA said that Elastic Reality v.3 created by Avid Technology Inc.Sadly, some jerk stole my CD and I have been searching for it since 2001 onwards.Did Avid discontinued it or has it been acquired by other software developers? The original software developers who created Elastic Reality have a company call Profound Effects and sell many plugins. They may still have copies of Elastic Reality. BTW, Softimage Co.,the subsdiary of Avid has acquired "CAT",the 3D Studio Max Plug-in created by "Character Animation Technologies" ,a few weeks back.--asydwaters 14:51, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Origin of Name

The name comes from the acronym A Victor In Disguise.

I am suspect of this, because its the first time I've heard this, the name is spelled with regular casing, a Google search turns up nothing... Please cite before putting it back in the article. --Mfv2 17:35, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

As the founder of the company, I can assure you that I had never heard of "A Victor in Disguise." The name came about in a rather ordinary way. I was playing around with acronyms....Audio Video followed by various items, and the word AVID popped out. I decided that the word, not the acronym, was what really described the company I sought to create. So the company's name became Avid Technology, Inc., using the word "avid." Later, our logo was a triangle with the word Avid below. The artist that created the logo spread out the letters, used all caps, and had an artistic "dot" between each letter. This may have led people to think that the letters stood for something, but they don't! Billwarner 04:11, 13 January 2007 (UTC)William J. Warner

The executive team has recently undergone a restructure and this section will need to be updated.

[edit] Avid editing products- have a single wikipedia page for this?

Perhaps all the avid editing products should be organized into one page... i.e. Avid (editing systems) This way you can make sense of the Avid family, from Xpress to Nitris DS and so forth. Glennchan 08:09, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] POV?

The introduction to Avid sounds like a promo passage straight off their Website! "Leader of this, this, this, this, this, boast, boast generalisation, boast, boast, blah"...
