Ballarat Bitter
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ballarat Bitter is a 4.9% (Abv) Australian beer, originally brewed in Ballarat, Australia by the Ballarat Brewing Company. The Ballarat Brewing Company was bought out by Carlton & United Beverages (or Carlton & United Breweries as it was known at the time, commonly abbreviated to 'CUB') in 1958, and the Ballarat bottling operations subsequently closed[1].
Ballarat Bitter was re-launched in 2006 by CUB, in a limited run (90 pallets, the full capacity of the vat used to brew it[2]) requested of the Foster's Group (CUB's parent company) by Catherine King, Federal Member for the Seat of Ballarat, after a visit aboard the Royal Australian Navy's ANZAC Class Guided Missile Frigate HMAS Ballarat[3].
The beer is of the bitter top fermented ale variety[4].
Ballarat Bitter is noted for the 'Ballarat Bertie' caricature on the label, a representation of an early-20th century cellar man.
