Baron Russell of Liverpool

Baron Russell of Liverpool, of Liverpool in the County Palatine of Lancaster, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1919 for Sir Edward Richard Russell. He served as editor of the Liverpool Daily Post for almost fifty years and also briefly represented Glasgow Bridgeton in the House of Commons as a Liberal. His grandson, the second Baron, was a prominent lawyer. As Deputy Judge Advocate General to the British Army of the Rhine he was one of the chief legal advisers during the war crime trials held after the end of the Second World War. As of 2007 the title is held by his grandson, the third Baron.

[edit] Russell's career
Edward Richard Russell, was a newspaper man who also involved himself in politics. Born in London in 1834, he was largely self-made, rising to become Editor of the Liverpool Daily Post, a position he held for almost fifty years. He is reputed to have been a man of outstanding ability, with high religious and moral standards. Well-travelled, an advocate of Temperance, an able public speaker, he supported the Liberal Party and was a founder of the Liverpool Parliamentary Debating Society. He corresponded with leading figures of the day, for example Annie Besant and H H Asquith. In 1865 he left Liverpool for London where he worked for the Morning Star and other newspapers. In writing parliamentary reports, he came to know members of government and was a friend of Gladstone.
When Russell returned to Liverpool in 1869, it was as editor of the Daily Post which, under his leadership, became known as an outstanding provincial newspaper. From 1885 to 1887 Russell was Liberal MP for the constituency of Glasgow Bridgeton, then in 1893 he was knighted. In 1919, the year before his death, he was created First Baron Russell of Liverpool, to be known as Lord Russell of Liverpool.

[edit] The Second Baron Russell of Liverpool
The second Lord Russell of Liverpool was the first Lord's grandson, Edward Frederick Langley Russell. He was something of a World War I hero, winning the Military Cross three times. He went on to become a prominent lawyer and as Deputy Judge Advocate General to the British Army of the Rhine he was one of the chief legal advisers during war crime trials held after the end of World War II. He was later resigned, however, from his government post over the publication of his book The scourge of the swastika: a short history of Nazi war crimes. Beaverbrook at the Daily Express published extracts under the heading “the book they tried to ban” in 1954 and the book became a bestseller. Russell followed it up in 1958 with The Knights of Bushido: A Short History of Japanese War Crimes.
