A map of the Battle of Badr, showing soldiers guarding the Meccan carvan approaching from the west, while the main Meccan army comes up from the south. The Muslim army is already in place, but moves to take up positions in front of the wells of Badr. Notice how the Muslim army has its backs to the valley while the Meccan army has an easy avenue of retreat, a strategy discussed in Sun Tzu's book The Art of War: "When you surround an army, leave an outlet free. Do not press a desperate foe too hard."
